Why Chito-Ryu Karate?

Chito-Ryu Karate has a rich history, rooted in the ancient Okinawan styles of Shorei Ryu and Shorin Ryu. It was founded by Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose, a medical doctor who brought his deep understanding of the human body to the dojo. He carefully refined traditional exercises and stances to ensure they were safe and healthy for every student. Dr. Chitose also believed that true self-defense should be well-rounded, incorporating throws and joint locks. Today, we’re proud to carry on his legacy, practicing Chito-Ryu as a path toward both better health and effective self-protection.

Our instructors have been training in Chito-Ryu karate for more than 30 years each, and bring deep experience and expertise to every class.

Every class blends traditional kata, partner drills, and conditioning, with an emphasis on correct technique and steady, healthy progress. Whether you are a child building confidence and coordination, an adult looking to get fit, or someone who simply wants to learn practical self-defense, you will find a welcoming place to train. Beginners are taught the fundamentals at their own pace, so no previous experience is needed to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Most of our students begin with no martial arts background at all. Classes are structured so that beginners learn the fundamentals step by step, at their own pace, alongside more experienced students.

How old does my child need to be to join?

Children can generally start around age six or seven, once they are ready to follow along and focus in a group setting. Adults of any age are welcome too — it is never too late to begin.

Can I try a class before joining?

Yes. Your first class is free. Come try a session, watch how we train, and meet the instructors before you decide. Just text or call ahead so we know to expect you.

What should I wear to my first class?

Just comfortable clothing you can move and stretch in, such as a t-shirt and athletic pants. A karate gi (uniform) is not needed to get started — you can pick one up later, once you have decided to continue training.

When and where do classes take place?

We train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Fredericton Christian Academy lower campus gym, 778 MacLaren Ave. Youth classes run from 7:00 to 8:00 PM and adult classes from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.
